Criticizing the Cultural Revolution
Imprisoned in the hysteria of the Cultural Revolution, Zhang was placed in an all-male prison, where other prisoners were encouraged to rape and torture her to reduce their own sentences. Zhang was executed without any legal proceedings. To prevent her from crying out before her death, the police slit her throat and inserted a metal pipe into her trachea - without anesthetics. Her husband and children were never allowed to visit after her arrest, and instead were forced to denounce their wife and mother.
