Wang Guangmei was the wife of Liu Shaoqi, the Deputy Chairman of the CCP Central Committee and President of China in the early 1960s. During the Cultural Revolution, Liu was denounced and she incriminated as Liu’s spouse and persecuted. In July 1967, Wang was labeled an American spy and put in prison. She spent 12 years in Qincheng Prison and was released in 1979. With the Cultural Revolution over, Wang was exonerated and her political status restored.
