Zha Jianguo participated in the forming of the Beijing-Tianjin Branch of the Democracy Party of China in 1998. He declared that the party’s principal goal is to “end the one-party dictatorship in China” and to “establish a democratic constitutional government with decentralized checks and balances." He was therefore arrested by the CCP, charged with subversion of state power, and sentenced to nine years in prison.
In 2010, the Laogai Research Foundation published his memoir, Steel Nerves Tender Heart .
