Liu Zhuanghuan and his son, Liu Xinhu, were both imprisoned at Baimaoling Laogai Farm following the Anti-Rightist Movement. Although they spent ten years in the same Laogai camp, they were not allowed to see each other even once.
Liu Zhuanghuan committed suicide in 1973 upon learning that, despite completing his prison term, he would be given forced labor job placement on the same Laogai farm. Only then did officials allow Liu Xinhu to see his father—now a corpse—and to collect his clothing. Liu Xinhu continued to be detained in the Laogai until 1983 when he served his prison sentence in full.
