Chen Xi was born in 1954 in Guizhou. In 1989, he was sentenced to three years in prison for organizing a "patriotic democracy federation." In 1995, Chen was arrested by Chinese authorities for organizing the Guizhou branch of the Chinese Democratic Party and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the charge of “organizing and leading a counterrevolutionary group.” On December 26, 2011, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) sentenced Chen to another 10 years in prison for posting 36 essays on the Internet that called for democracy and criticized the CCP.
