Hao Nai was the acting archbishop of the Catholic diocese of Taiyuan in his native province of Shanxi. Because he refused to comply with government’s demand to declare his separation from the Vatican, he was arrested in September 1955 and charged with “organizing the Hao Nai counterrevolutionary clique,” “colluding with imperialists,” and “attempts to subvert a people’s democratic government.”

He was held until February 1961, when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. On February 26, 1970, the authorities announced that Hao Nai had committed “active counterrevolutionary crimes” and changed his sentence to the death penalty. His execution was carried out on the same day.
